AM Best Revises Outlooks to Positive for The Doctors Company and Subsidiaries

AM Best has revised the outlooks to positive from stable and affirmed The Doctors Company’s financial strength rating (FSR) of A (Excellent) and the long-term issuer credit rating (ICR) of "a+”. The positive outlooks, FSR of A, and long-term ICR of “a+” have been affirmed for The Doctors Company, an Interinsurance Exchange, and its core subsidiaries, which collectively comprise The Doctors Company Insurance Group. The FSR of A is assigned only to select companies with excellent ability to meet ongoing insurance obligations. The “a+” ICR is assigned to entities that have an excellent ability to meet their ongoing senior financial obligations.

With $7.8 billion in assets and over 97,000 members, The Doctors Company is a reliable partner and the strongest of any physician-owned insurer in the market. Your clients can count on us to have the power and financial resources to protect them today and for many years to come.

ProAssurance Acquisition Update

The Doctors Company’s acquisition of ProAssurance that was first announced in March 2025 will allow both organizations to continue to serve today’s healthcare practitioners with the necessary scale and breadth of capabilities.

Closing the transaction remains subject to approval from insurance regulators in the jurisdictions where ProAssurance has operating subsidiaries domiciled. To date, The Doctors Company has received final approval from insurance regulators in Alabama, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Missouri, and Vermont. Review of the proposed transaction by insurance regulators remains pending in California and Pennsylvania. The timing for completion of the pending reviews is uncertain and outside our control, but in light of progress made, we currently anticipate closing the transaction in the first half of 2026.

Claim Frequency for Physician Malpractice Insurance Is Increasing

Healthcare tort reform in the early 2000s kept claim frequency for physician malpractice insurance flat for two decades. This year, however, The Doctors Company is seeing frequency creep up for the first time since those changes. Physicians’ insurers are struggling with the same loss inflation challenges as other liability peers. Robert E. White, Jr., President of The Doctors Company and TDC Group, discusses The Doctors Company’s latest study, “Nuclear Verdicts and Rising Costs: How Inflation Is Impacting Medical Malpractice Claims,” claims frequency and severity trends, and the importance of tort reform in a feature article by Insurance Insider that may be of interest to your clients and as talking points for your prospecting efforts.

Bob will also be presenting at a free virtual webinar, “Nuclear Verdicts & Rising Costs,” where he’ll discuss nuclear verdicts, social inflation, and how physicians can advocate for themselves and their profession in this evolving environment, on Wednesday, December 3, from noon to 1:00 PM (ET).
