Celebrating 50 Years of The Doctors Company

April 15, 2026, marked an extraordinary milestone for The Doctors Company as we began celebrating 50 years of serving our members and advancing, protecting, and rewarding the practice of good medicine.

Fifty years ago, as California was gripped by a medical malpractice insurance crisis, physicians came together to advocate for historic medical liability reform legislation that became the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA). In the wake of this achievement, The Doctors Company emerged as an entirely new type of insurer—a carrier founded and led by doctors.

In our first year, following our founding on April 15, 1976, 450 physicians subscribed as members. Now, we are the nation’s largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer, protecting more than 100,000 members nationwide, including physicians, dentists, clinicians, and practitioners of all specialties.

This half-century milestone is a testament to our financial strength and stability. Our success has been built on a conservative business philosophy designed to fully empower our mission, giving your clients certainty as they face the challenges of nuclear verdicts, the increased complexity of modern care, and the continuing consolidation of healthcare delivery. In a time when clinicians and healthcare organizations face more legal and financial risk than ever, we have the power and resources necessary to protect our members today and for many years to come.

This strength is evident in the Tribute® Plan, which has received continuous annual funding since its launch. Unlike many liability insurers that have paused or ended similar programs, The Doctors Company continues to fund Tribute from its own capital—not from premiums.
