During The Doctors Company’s inaugural year in 1976, 450 physicians subscribed as members. Today, as we celebrate our 50th year, we are the nation’s largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer, protecting more than 100,000 members nationwide, including physicians, dentists, clinicians, and practitioners of all specialties. As we’ve grown, we’ve remained true to the principles that inspired our founders. We protect those who care for us so they can focus not on the ever-present threat of litigation, invasive regulation, or financial loss, but instead on what matters most: providing exceptional patient care.

I am honored to be a part of our industry-leading legacy that has served healthcare—and all the heroes on the front lines of care—for half a century. The Doctors Company is built to last. We are building an enduring national platform for service to healthcare. In a time when healthcare professionals face more legal and financial risk than ever before, we will remain the insurer of choice and a champion they can rely on.
Richard E. Anderson, MD, FACP
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Fifty years ago, as California was gripped by a medical malpractice insurance crisis, leading physicians lobbied for the historic legislation that became MICRA (the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act of 1975). Many of the doctors leading that battle took the next step and created an entirely new type of professional liability insurer, one that was founded and led by physicians.
The Mission Was Clear: The Doctors Company would work relentlessly to advance, protect, and reward the practice of good medicine.
The Doctors Company is founded as a new type of carrier—owned and led by physicians—with an initial 450 members.

Our physician-owned model has allowed us to prioritize the needs of our members over the demands of stockholders, building long-term member loyalty though innovative benefits like the Tribute® Plan, an unmatched reward for careers spent providing superior patient care that has distributed over $200 million to date. We protect our members with the industry's strongest malpractice defense, promising to never settle a claim without member consent, where permitted by law. Our industry-leading malpractice insurance coverage is backed by our superior financial strength.
We are guided by The Doctors Company Board of Governors, an accomplished, distinguished group of professionals who are passionate about advancing, protecting, and rewarding the practice of good medicine. The Board includes physicians, healthcare leaders, and distinguished executives—representing many of the nation's leading medical centers, property and casualty insurers, and financial advisors.

Advocacy for medical liability reform is at the core of The Doctors Company. One of The Doctors Company founders, Charles O'Brien, was coauthor of the MICRA legislation that is the national model for tort reform nationwide. His contributions are recognized on the board room of our national headquarters.
Since MICRA, The Doctors Company has been a founding member of every coalition that has led to medical liability reform nationwide. We lead the industry with a dedicated, award-winning Government Relations team and the only medical liability advocacy program covering all 50 states and the federal level. We defend reforms that are in place, prevent legislation from being enacted that would undermine the defenses of our members, and take opportunities to enact new measures that would limit liability exposure for healthcare professionals across the country. We dedicate ourselves to this calling so that the voices of healthcare professionals across the nation are heard from the exam room, to the courtroom, to the nation's capital.

The Doctors Company was the first in the industry to have a dedicated Patient Safety Department. We use data-driven insights to predict complications ahead in the ever-changing practice environment and provide innovative resources and coverage to help medical professionals address the challenges they face.
Our visionary patient safety and risk management programs help clinicians and practices implement effective protocols, resulting in significantly fewer allegations of malpractice. And the industry's largest claims database gives us an unparalleled understanding of malpractice lawsuits, allowing us to anticipate emerging trends and deliver tools to help our members reduce risk.
