The festivities of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics may have wrapped up, but in Lausanne (pronounced loh-zahn), every year is an Olympics year. In fact, Lausanne is now celebrating its milestone 30th anniversary as the Olympic Capital. Home to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1915 and a magnificent Olympic Museum, the Swiss city champions the Games year-round, long before and after the official ceremonies in Paris between July 26 and September 8.

Honoring the rich history and traditions that encompass the Games, the Olympic Museum is the world’s largest and most complete collection of Olympic heritage, with over 1,500 exhibits, 150 screens including interactive touchscreens, and the latest technological and audiovisual media to help visitors experience the Olympic spirit the way athletes felt it—from antiquity to present day. Its international exhibitions and programs are intended to connect people of all ages and backgrounds with the diverse history, art, and culture of this global sports competition.

And there’s no shortage of fascinating Olympic stories to delve into that date back thousands of years. For example, long before gymnast Mary Lou Retton scored two perfect 10s or Billy Mills became the USA’s one and only gold medalist in the men’s 10,000 meter run, the ancient Greek sprinter Astylos of Croton was victorious in three successive Olympic Games from 488 to 480 B.C.—while barefoot and naked, which was customary during those times.

Once you’ve had your fill of athletes’ accomplishments, you can explore the creativity and history behind stadium architecture, uniform fashions and development, and even equipment and outfits worn by some of the most famous and storied Olympians throughout the course of the Games. 

You can also learn about the evolution of anti-doping technology, sample cafeteria food that was offered in various Olympic villages, or put your own skills to the test by sprinting at an outdoor track or slalom skiing in an indoor interactive simulator.

Lausanne’s Olympic Museum is actually so impressive and popular, it moonlights as a wedding venue for extreme enthusiasts!
