Leadership Moves
With the retirement of former Board of Governors members Eugene M. Bullis, CPA; Charles R. Kossman, PhD, MD; and Mary Ann Thode, JD, MPH, RN, The Doctors Company is pleased to announce the appointment of new Board of Governors members John M. Haupert, FACHE; Henna A. Karna, PhD; and Ami Parekh, MD, JD.

John M. Haupert, FACHE, is a board certified Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and recipient of the ACHE Regent’s Leadership Award. He currently serves as the President and CEO of Grady Health System, based in Atlanta, Georgia. Nationally, Mr. Haupert serves as the Chair of the American Hospital Association (AHA) Board of Trustees, serving as the top elected official for the organization, which represents America’s hospitals and health systems and works to advance health in America. He also chairs the AHA’s Strategic Leadership Group for Urban Hospital Sustainability. He is a former Chair of the Board of Directors of America’s Essential Hospitals. He also served as the 2019 Chair of the Georgia Hospital Association Board of Directors. Mr. Haupert is a graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio, where he earned a bachelor of science in business administration and a master of science degree in healthcare administration.

Henna A. Karna, PhD, a tech entrepreneur and a proven expert in patented product design, development, and launch. She is a highly respected global leader in establishing effective and committed teams. Dr. Karna has won numerous awards for digital innovations that leverage artificial intelligence (AI), data, and complex analytics across various industries, including high-tech, CPG, risk management, and financial services (capital markets, payments, and commercial insurance). She has led businesses and advised Fortune 50 companies on digital innovation and disruption and has designed and developed patent-pending technology and applications in the field of genetic algorithms, behavioral analytics, deep neural nets, and digital-data technologies. Dr. Karna is currently on the Board of Essent Group, Hamilton Insurance Group, and AAA NE. Most recently, Dr. Karna served as the General Manager, MD, Global Insurance & Risk Management Solutions, at Google, leading global insurance strategy, products, and solutions roadmap, including cloud-based SaaS data, analytics, AI, and ML capabilities for insurers, reinsurers, brokers, agents, and the broader insurance ecosystem. Prior to Google, Dr. Karna served as Executive Vice President and Global Chief Data Officer at AXA XL. Over the course of her career, Dr. Karna has served as President of Verisk Digital Services at the data and analytics and risk management firm Verisk Analytics, Vice President of Digital Customer Strategy for Verisk Analytics, and Managing Director and Global Actuarial CIO for AIG. Her work has been published in more than three dozen cognitive science and mathematics research publications, as well as CEO/CFO Magazine. Previously, Dr. Karna was listed in Insurance Networking News’ “Top 15 People in Insurance Technology” and “Top 20 Executives.” Dr. Karna is a Senior Fellow of Harvard University and holds an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a bachelor of mathematical sciences from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. She earned her master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Massachusetts.

Ami Parekh, MD, JD, is the Chief Health Officer at Included Health, where she leads their national primary care, urgent care, behavioral health, clinical navigation, and population health management practices. Dr. Parekh's expertise is in driving system-level change toward value for the patients and purchasers of American healthcare. Past awards include a Fierce Healthcare Women of Influence award and being named one of the San Francisco Business Times’ Most Influential Women in Business. She also serves on the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Board of Directors. Dr. Parekh previously served as Chief Medical Officer of Population Health and Clinical Integration for UCSF Health and served on the founding board of Canopy Health, a regional health plan. She also volunteered on the Watsi Coverage Advisory Board, a nonprofit focused on developing models of health insurance for the developing world. Dr. Parekh completed her internal medicine residency at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. While there, she was selected to be a Chief Resident at Faulkner Hospital. She attended Yale Medical School and Yale Law School, where she spent summers working on Capitol Hill and served as the co-convenor for former President Obama’s 2008 campaign Health Policy Committee. She also served on the Board of Universities Allied for Essential Medicines. Dr. Parekh previously worked for McKinsey and Company, where she developed and communicated growth, cost-cutting, and innovation strategy plans to a diverse set of client stakeholders. She has also volunteered her time to work on antiretroviral pricing negotiations with international generic pharmaceutical companies for the Clinton Foundation. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Williams College, majoring in political science and biology.
We would also like to announce the promotions of The Doctors Company’s Julie Ritzman, MBA, CPHRM, and Zach Manoogian, RPLU.

Julie Ritzman, MBA, CPHRM, has been promoted to National Senior Vice President of Patient Safety and Risk Management and operates out of The Doctors Company’s office in Sherman Oaks, California. Before taking on the National Senior Vice President role, Julie was the Vice President of Patient Safety and Risk Management for Region I. Julie’s background includes experience as Vice President of Risk Management Services at the Mutual Insurance Company of Arizona (MICA) from 2014 to 2019. Prior to that, she worked for 15 years as a Risk Manager within large health systems such as Dignity and Sanford Health. Julie has served on the Medical Professional Liability Association Risk Management Committee for several years and is currently Section Chair.
Julie holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota and is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management.

Zach Manoogian, RPLU, has been promoted from Director to Assistant Vice President of Business Development in The Doctors Company’s Region II. Zach joined The Doctors Company as a Senior Underwriter for the Underwriting Department in the previous Northeast region’s complex team. Prior to working for The Doctors Company, Zach was employed at CNA Insurance where he was a member of their healthcare underwriting segment as well as having previously served as a producer for SCW Agency Group. He has a background in underwriting medical professional liability and healthcare professional liability business, sales, and alternative risks.
Zach earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from The Ohio State University. He holds a Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU) designation and a property and casualty (P&C) license.
