Advanced Practice Clinician Advisory Board

Nearly 84 million Americans lack adequate primary care, and advanced practice clinicians (APCs) are crucial for maintaining and expanding patient access. TDC Group established our APC Advisory Board to help provide APCs with the resources they need to thrive in the evolving healthcare industry. Our APC board members—nurse practitioners (NPs), certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs), and physician assistant/associates (PAs)—publish articles and videos to share their expert insights and foster discussions about the unique liability risks APCs face.

Insights and Resources from the APC Board

Learn more about the APC liability landscape in these authored articles and featured videos from our board members.

APCs

Earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), Contact Hours (ANCC) (1.00 hours), or Non-Physician Attendance (1.00 hours).

Choosing the right malpractice insurer is one of the most important professional decisions you’ll make.

This guide can help APCs reduce risk in all practice environments, whether you practice autonomously, as part of a collaborative agreement, or under the supervision of a physician.

Facility-specific standards of practice, operating procedures, and medical staff bylaws can vary by location and by department. Assuming consistency across sites creates avoidable risk.

Many clinicians don’t realize they’ve been reported to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) until their credentials are reviewed as part of the employment verification process at a new job.

A common misconception about the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) is that a report implies wrongdoing. Many reports are mandated and may not fully reflect the circumstances.

Malpractice cases involving advanced practice clinicians are most common in the first few years of practice and when nearing retirement.

NPs

Learn why relying solely on employer professional liability coverage can leave gaps in your protection.

NPs are often underinsured and their limits of liability are often inadequate.

With NPs taking on increased autonomy and accountability, they face distinct, significant, and long-lasting liability risks.

Nurse practitioners are stepping into new practice environments, which comes with the responsibility to ensure the care being delivered aligns with their training, experience, and state regulations.

Floating NPs across different care settings requires careful consideration. Each NP’s education and experience should be aligned with the care environment to support safe and effective practice.

NPs could face an allegation of malpractice—whether or not they’ve committed a medical error—and many NPs are not insured in proportion to their current risks.

PAs

PAs can mitigate professional liability risks by committing to five strategies for safety and teamwork.

Whether PAs deliver primary care, assist with cardiothoracic surgery, perform procedures in the emergency department, or practice in other settings, they are part of a team—and their teams are in high demand.

As care shortages intensify around the U.S., the pressure is on to implement best practices to safely manage patient care.

CRNAs

Understand reports to the National Practitioner Data Bank and what CRNAs can do to reduce risk.

Enhance clinical skills and prepare for emergencies.

There is an important difference between standards of care and standards of practice for CRNAs. Learn why it’s important for CRNAs to understand the distinction in every care setting.

CNMs and CMs

Lay the groundwork for escalation in advance to promote patient safety and mitigate risk.

Understand coverage options to protect your license, mobility, and long-term financial health.

This presentation provides a detailed examination of medical professional liability insurance, specifically designed for midwives.

As midwives are taking on increasing autonomy and accountability, they face unique challenges every day.

In today’s high-pressure clinical environments, team turnover is common. Without clear communication about roles and responsibilities, misunderstandings can quickly escalate into formal complaints instead of productive dialogue.

Industry-Leading Malpractice Coverage for APCs

One of healthcare’s fastest growing professional segments, APCs who render patient care are advised to carry malpractice insurance coverage. TDC Group, through medical professional liability insurers The Doctors Company and The Doctors Company Risk Retention Group (RRG), launched a digital automated underwriting platform to make coverage more accessible and affordable, with the advisory board providing key guidance on challenges and opportunities for clinicians.

As the nation’s most trusted provider of insurance and risk management solutions, we are uniquely suited to offer APCs valuable guidance as healthcare evolves. TDC Group offers coverage in 50 states for:
