News at-a-Glance

The Doctors Company to Acquire ProAssurance

We are pleased to announce that The Doctors Company has signed a definitive agreement to acquire ProAssurance Corporation. The combined organization will be the second largest medical malpractice insurance company in the nation and—by a significant margin—the largest physician-owned carrier. Consolidation in healthcare at every level is resulting in fewer, larger, more powerful entities across providers as well as our distribution partners. This move ensures that The Doctors Company will have the stature, profile, and influence to fully service the demands and requirements of these new players as the sector continues to evolve.

Despite this exciting news, it will be business as usual for the foreseeable future. The transaction must first be approved by shareholders and by regulators in numerous states, approvals which will likely take at least 12 months to process. We anticipate the sale becoming final in the first half of 2026, so until this time, The Doctors Company and ProAssurance will remain in competition.

The Doctors Company Delivers Best Imaginable Service Once Again in 2024

As the nation’s largest member-owned medical malpractice insurer, we are dedicated to providing your clients with the best imaginable service.

Toward the end of last year, we surveyed our members about their experiences with The Doctors Company and the results we received indicated that exceptional service was one of the most important features of our coverage, with 93 percent of respondents being very satisfied or satisfied with our Member Services’ handling of phone calls, questions, and requests. Other notable 2024 satisfaction ratings included accuracy of billing at 94 percent, claims prevention efforts at 90 percent, and our defense efforts at 93 percent.

Member Satisfaction Ratings

We also learned through last year’s survey that The Doctors Company has a Net Promoter Score (NPS)—or score that measures customer loyalty by looking at customers’ likelihood of recommending us to their peers—of 78. This rating is among the highest customer loyalty scores in the U.S., which is significantly higher than such reputable brands as Apple, Costco, and USAA.

And through surveying the physicians we have defended from malpractice allegations, we found that among that group, The Doctors Company’s NPS score rises even more to 91—a top-notch score that indicates extremely high member satisfaction with our Claims team’s work on their behalf to protect their reputations.

New Web Guide for APCs Explains What to Look for When Choosing an Insurer

Advanced practice clinicians (APCs) face distinct, significant, and long-lasting liability risks, and providing excellent care is not enough to mitigate them. For many APCs, the question of medical malpractice insurance likely comes up twice: first when considering a job offer, and second when a concerning case arises.

Careful evaluation of liability coverage options is essential for APCs to protect their licenses, reputations, professional and geographic mobility, and long-term financial health. Even if their employer provides coverage, having their own professional liability insurance is crucial for safeguarding their career.

If you have APC clients who are new to practice, our Choosing a Professional Liability Insurance Carrier: A Guide for Advanced Practice Clinicians, provides comprehensive explanations to answer key questions your APC clients may have about first-time purchasing of malpractice insurance.

Two-Factor Authentication Mandatory in September

The Doctors Company is relentlessly committed to data security and protecting the personal and professional information of all our agents/brokers and members. Cyberattacks are becoming increasingly more sophisticated and are a tremendous threat to all businesses.

To address this challenge, The Doctors Company is implementing two-factor authentication, also known as multifactor authentication, as a mandatory data security precaution for our Agent/Broker and Member portals on September 10.

The use of this authentication process is not just a requirement of The Doctors Company, but it is also a regulatory requirement that we must follow to protect proprietary information. Industry trends show that many other insurance carriers are also shifting to the use of two-factor authentication.

The process is simple. All portal users will be required to have their own unique username and password. In addition, there will be two types of authentication factors accepted by The Doctors Company to gain access to the portal. You can either receive a code via an SMS text message or a voice phone call.

We will continue to keep you informed as we approach the required phase of two-factor authentication.

Proxy Outreach to Your Clients

In the coming weeks, we will be reaching out to a select group of insureds/members for whom we do not have their proxy on record. This outreach is an essential part of our efforts to engage with them to ensure they have the opportunity to vote on important company issues.

We value your partnership and appreciate your understanding as we undertake this important communication campaign. Please rest assured that our outreach will be conducted in a respectful and professional manner, always adhering to the terms of our agency agreement.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding our plans to contact our insureds/members, please do not hesitate to reach out to your Business Development representative. We are committed to open communication and transparency with our valued agents and brokers.
