I’ve always been passionate about taking care of unique things—I am an avid antiques collector and reader. I’ve also experienced struggles throughout life and times of having less. Especially in such moments, support from those around me has been instrumental in my success. The importance of community is something that I appreciate firsthand and for which I have so much gratitude. That’s why, now, I donate to more than a dozen organizations.
Two organizations I contribute to speak to the lifelong learner in me. I support Michigan Public Broadcasting because I’ve always found its programming valuable. Their content is wonderful for kids, and they are active in the local community. I donate to Reading Is Fundamental, because I remember how much receiving those free books meant to me as a child. I’m a big proponent of objective journalism, so I also support the East Lansing Insider for local news coverage, as well as ProPublica’s investigative journalism, because through partnerships with local newsrooms, they report on stories that can spark real-world impact and positive change.
Among organizations I’ve discovered along the way and been inspired by, some have broad reach, like the Jacques Pépin Foundation, which provides cooking education for those who experience barriers to employment. Charities like Oxfam America, Alzheimer’s Research Association, and The Nature Conservancy each champion their causes to great effect as well.
Others have a more local focus. OurSpace’s Juneteenth Celebration offers a special platform for cultural appreciation, community building, and connection. Hope Network’s Neuro Rehabilitation program cares for those with traumatic brain injuries, supporting the comeback journeys of people who, in many cases, must learn how to live again.
Some donations are made monthly; others one time. Either way, The Doctors Company’s Fidelity app makes it easy to multiply my donations’ significance. I love the October double-match program, so I save my most important gifts for that occasion.
While my individual donations might not be grand, The Doctors Company’s matching program amplifies their impact, which encourages and enables me to give back to the causes I care deeply about.
When the world feels like it’s in upheaval, what keeps me focused and hopeful is seeing people helping others. Those who coordinate the logistics and work to build and run these organizations—they’re the magic to me. They remind me that human nature is still good.
TDC Group is building the preeminent organization for service to healthcare. We encourage employees to use the Employee Gift Matching Program as they invest in the health of their communities.
