Rethinking Population Health: Videos Focus on Strategy to Control Healthcare Costs

Napa, California—February 3, 2016—A unique strategy for population health management is highlighted in a video series featuring Erika K. Johnson, MHSA, Vice President, Strategic Research, Vizient, Inc., and released by The Doctors Company, the nation’s largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer.

In the first video, Ms. Johnson explains why the trajectory of U.S. healthcare spending is unsustainable and why population health management approaches have not been effective at controlling costs and improving patient care. These approaches have focused on trying to control every interaction of every patient. However, a very small subset of the population is contributing to the majority of healthcare spending. A new perspective on managing population health—by dividing the population into four cohorts—allows for more effective, targeted approaches to managing the health of patients, according to Ms. Johnson.
