Napa, California—April 9, 2013—The Doctors Company, the nation’s largest medical malpractice insurer, announced today its latest video, “Physician Leadership Elements Transcend All Environments,” featuring Donald J. Palmisano, MD, JD, FACS, member of The Doctors Company’s Board of Governors and former president of the American Medical Association.
In the video, Dr. Palmisano notes that the elements necessary for leadership are no different in clinical situations than in non-clinical environments. No matter the environment, physician leaders should practice compassionate communication, which involves listening, showing understanding, and offering help, he states. Dr. Palmisano is a recognized lecturer and author on leadership and has written about compassionate communication in his book, On Leadership.
“From our extensive database on closed claims, The Doctors Company has identified communication between physicians and their patients as an important factor in reducing risk,” said Stacy Schultz, vice president of marketing for The Doctors Company. “We are pleased to provide this expert insight on communication and leadership skills to promote patient safety and advance the practice of good medicine.”
