New Partnership Helps Prepare Doctors to Thrive in a Digitized Healthcare Environment

Robert Wachter, MD, and The Doctors Company Collaborate to Create Innovative Digital Medicine Resources

Napa, California—June 28, 2016—Robert M. Wachter, MD, bestselling author of The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype, and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine's Computer Age, and The Doctors Company, the nation’s largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer, today announced a partnership that will help U.S. doctors adapt to and thrive in the evolving digital healthcare landscape.

“The combination of Dr. Wachter’s deep expertise in the digitalization of medicine and The Doctors Company’s insights into the complexities of medical practice across all specialties will provide physicians with information and unique tools to help them stay current with digital trends in medicine and make the adjustments necessary to continue providing quality care,” said Stacy Schultz, senior vice president of marketing at The Doctors Company. “Our partnership with this respected thought leader reflects our mission to advance the practice of good medicine.”

All doctors can take advantage of a new online resource center featuring 12 short videos that explore digital medicine topics, including:

  • Mobile apps, wearables, and other new technologies that have flooded doctors with data. Few doctors have the technological background or bandwidth to process and analyze such data. Addressing this information overload will mean reevaluating how doctors and patients share information.
  • The implications to doctors of digital tools that increase patients’ access to healthcare and improve patient engagement. Patients may feel they can use these tools to manage their own healthcare. Doctors must seek a balance between engaging their patients and ensuring the patients know when to seek professional medical care.
  • The risks involved in using electronic health records and how to minimize them. These digital systems were designed to improve patient care and speed the transfer of patient data. However, they are fraught with design flaws and cannot always transfer the necessary data electronically between providers.

“I envision the future of healthcare to be an entirely digital system, with the relationship between patient and doctor utterly transformed,” Dr. Wachter said. “Healthcare organizations and physicians are under intense pressure to provide value, enhance patient safety, increase access to care, improve the patient experience, and create efficiencies. My partnership with The Doctors Company will provide its 78,000 members and other physicians nationwide with the tools and information needed to thrive in today’s rapidly changing digital landscape.”

Dr. Wachter will be the keynote speaker at The Doctors Company’s July 14 Executive Advisory Board meeting in Napa, an annual forum that brings together thought leaders from across the country with the medical malpractice insurer’s leadership and advisors to share trends in healthcare and medical practice.
