Expert Outlines Best Practices When Physicians Collaborate on Patient Care

Napa, California—May 14, 2013—The Doctors Company, the nation’s largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer, announced today its latest video, “How to Define Hospitalist Co-Management Guidelines.” The video is based on expert insights presented at The Doctors Company’s recent Hospitalist Advisory Board meeting.

In the video, Liesbet Joris-Quinton, MD, FACP, SFHM, division head, hospital medicine, Scripps Clinic Medical Group, member, Hospitalist Advisory Board, suggests the following best practices when hospitalists are co-managing patients with physician specialists:

  • Create trustful and respectful partnerships with specialty colleagues.
  • Clearly define roles and responsibilities.
  • Ensure rules and regulations are adopted by all.
  • Articulate criteria for including and excluding patients for co-management.
  • Identify a champion to work with specialists.

“The information presented by Dr. Joris-Quinton at our Hospitalist Advisory Board meeting is particularly relevant during these times of rapid changes in the healthcare environment,” said Robin Diamond, JD, RN, chief patient safety officer, The Doctors Company. “We are pleased to share best practices and other insights from healthcare leaders through our video series.”
