Napa, California—May 7, 2013—The Doctors Company, the nation’s largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer, released today a new video that focuses on how OB hospitalists can reduce risks and promote patient safety in maternal and neonatal care.
In the video, “How OB Hospitalists Reduce Liability Risks,” Mark N. Simon, MD, MMM, OB Hospitalist Group and member of The Doctors Company’s Hospitalist Advisory Board, points out that the number one risk in obstetrics and gynecology is delay in responding to an obstetrical emergency. According to Dr. Simon, hospitals can work to reduce this risk by having board certified ob/gyn hospitalists on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week so they can respond in the event that the patient’s ob/gyn physician or nurse midwife is not immediately available.
OB hospitalist programs are not without challenges, several of which are discussed in the video. For example, an OB hospitalist may have to treat an unassigned patient who has had limited or no prenatal care. Also, the hospital must set up new policies and procedures for an OB hospitalist program, including a procedure for follow up on unassigned patients once they are discharged.
