Expanded Cybersecurity Guide Covers Ransomware and Other Top Threats

Ransomware Attacks Up 300% to Date in 2016

Napa, California—August 23, 2016—Strategies and tools to address the increasingly sophisticated cyber threats facing the healthcare industry are the focus of an updated and expanded cybersecurity guide released by The Doctors Company, the nation’s largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer. “Cybersecurity and Data Breaches” is an essential resource for healthcare organizations to mitigate risk, monitor security, and respond in the event of a cyber attack.

Cyber attacks are now the leading cause of healthcare breaches, ahead of third-party mishandling of data, stolen or lost devices, and malicious insiders. The market for stolen personal health information (PHI) remains lucrative—not only do over 50 percent of all cyber attacks occur in healthcare, but there have been 4,000 daily ransomware attacks since early 2016, a 300 percent increase over the 1,000 daily attacks in 2015.

“In today’s environment, it’s not a matter of if a breach will occur—it’s a matter of when,” says Craig Musgrave, chief information officer at The Doctors Company. “It is vital that medical practices of all sizes take steps to reduce the risk of a breach and build a response strategy that will lessen the impact if a breach does occur. We’ve updated and expanded our guide to address the newest threats like ransomware and to give practices actionable strategies to protect their patients’ health data.”

The expanded guide offers:

  • Case examples that illustrate specific risks.
  • An extensive explanation of ransomware attacks and how to guard against them.
  • Information on how to recognize fraudulent and phishing e-mails.
  • Tips on how to combat password theft.
  • Ways to scrutinize vendors, including cloud vendors, to ensure they are taking full precautions to protect PHI.
  • Strategies for responding to a breach, including preparing for lawsuits and HIPAA notification requirements.
