Leading Obstetrician/Gynecologists Provide Tips in Video Playlist

Napa, California—August 21, 2014—Creating a culture of patient safety and implementing successful communication techniques can enhance patient care, according to experts featured in a video series produced by The Doctors Company, the nation’s largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer.

The playlist, “How to Improve Patient Care and Satisfaction,” consists of nine two-minute videos. It features Susan Mann, MD, clinical assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, and Marcus Tower, MD, medical director of gynecology and care management at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation/Hillcrest Hospital.

Dr. Mann, a national consultant in patient safety and quality improvement in the field of obstetrics, focuses on ways to create a patient safety culture. In five videos, she discusses:

  • Key steps to creating a patient safety culture.
  • How culture affects patient safety.
  • Using crew resource management to empower all staff and ensure patient safety.
  • Creating a patient-centered team structure.
  • Easy solutions for improving patient care.

In four videos, Dr. Tower suggests communication techniques that can strengthen the doctor/patient relationship, such as:

  • Practice reflective listening.
  • Ask open-ended questions.
  • Engage in a dialogue with patients by asking questions and responding to questions.
  • Analyze your communication techniques after each patient encounter.
  • Explore the patient’s concerns and be empathetic.

Dr. Mann and Dr. Tower were among the obstetrical specialists who gathered at the most recent OB Advisory Board meeting hosted by The Doctors Company. The annual meeting brings together top practitioners from around the country to meet with patient safety, claims, and underwriting leaders from The Doctors Company to analyze emerging trends and discuss key patient safety issues.
