Physician Leaders Study Patient Safety, Learn from Others’ Errors
In Video, Former President of American Medical Association Says Mistakes Arise from the System
Napa, California—February 26, 2013—The Doctors Company, the nation’s largest medical malpractice insurer, announced today its latest video, “Physician Leaders Study Patient Safety,” featuring Donald J. Palmisano, MD, JD, FACS, member of The Doctors Company’s Board of Governors and former president of the American Medical Association.
In the video, Dr. Palmisano notes that leaders in medicine learn from the errors of others in order to prevent the same mistakes. He recommends fixing the system issue that led to error, rather than resorting to a “shame and blame culture.” These leaders, he says, turn to such sources as The Doctors Company’s online patient safety resources, The Joint Commission, the National Patient Safety Foundation, and the PDR Network to study patient safety.
“As the first medical malpractice insurer to establish a patient safety department, The Doctors Company has set the industry standard for patient safety information,” said Stacy Schultz, vice president of marketing for The Doctors Company. “We are proud to provide insightful online content to assist physicians in reducing risk and avoiding claims.”
