The Doctors Company Video Provides Alternate Perspective on Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs)

Fourth Video in Series Features Health Care System that Decided Against ACO

Napa, California—October 16, 2012—The Doctors Company, the nation’s largest medical malpractice insurer, announced today the fourth video in its Executive Advisory Board Speaker Series. This latest video in the eight-video series on YouTube provides a dissenting view on establishing ACOs, a new health care model in which providers agree to be accountable for the quality, cost, and overall care of Medicare patients.

The video, “Why ACOs Aren’t Right for Every Physicians Group: A Dissent,” features Larry L. Smith, JD, vice president of risk management services at MedStar Health, a $4 billion not-for-profit, regional health care system with a network of nine hospitals and 20 other health-related businesses across Maryland and the Washington, D.C., region. In the video, Smith discusses MedStar Health’s decision not to pursue the ACO application process and how MedStar Health will instead work with its staff to prepare for the risk associated with population health care.

Smith was a featured speaker at The Doctors Company’s recent 2012 Executive Advisory Board meeting, a forum where dynamic thought leaders explored topics of importance to modern medical practices in the evolving health care environment. Videos featuring speakers from this meeting will be posted on The Doctors Company YouTube channel weekly through mid-November.
