Foundation Supports Telluride Camp for Health Science Students
The Doctors Company Foundation provided a grant to the MedStar Hospital Center Foundation and the University of North Carolina School of Nursing to help 60 medical and 30 nursing students participate in a 2016 Telluride Patient Safety Educational Summer Camp for Health Science Students.
Students joined leaders in medical education, medical liability, health system leadership, patient safety, patient advocacy, and healthcare practice for intensive one-week sessions in Telluride, Colorado; Washington, DC; and Napa, California. Participants studied patient safety, interprofessional teamwork, human factors engineering, just culture, and leadership.
“These sessions help students understand why open, honest, and effective communication between caregivers and patients is critical to reducing risks in healthcare,” said Leona H. Rice, executive director of the Foundation. “The students then take this knowledge back to their institutions, where they can act as change agents to overcome barriers to safety and transparency.”
