Foundation Reaches Milestone

The Doctors Company Foundation has reached a $5 million milestone in grants for patient safety research and educational training. The purpose of the Foundation is to support patient safety education for healthcare professionals in training and in practice, and patient safety research with clinically useful applications. In this context, patient safety is defined as a healthcare discipline that minimizes the incidence and impact of adverse events by redesigning systems and processes using human factors principles to reduce errors.

“These grants are evidence of the uncompromising commitment to The Doctors Company’s mission of advancing the practice of good medicine in every way, no matter how a physician practices in today’s environment,” said David B. Troxel, MD, board chairman of the Foundation and medical director of The Doctors Company. “Grants have been awarded to individual physicians doing research, national nonprofit patient safety organizations, and academic medical centers.”

For example, the Foundation has given grant support to the Academy for Emerging Leaders in Patient Safety, an organization that provides exceptional training for medical and nursing students by giving them the knowledge, skills, and behaviors they need to become leaders and “champions” of patient safety.

The Foundation also supported the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) in developing guidelines in root cause analysis to help organizations improve the way they investigate errors, adverse events, and near misses. Organizations nationwide are now implementing these guidelines to conduct better analyses of their medical errors and risks, fostering more transparency among physicians, patients, and families. In addition, the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Diagnostic Error in Health Care issued a study, Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, that was partially funded by The Doctors Company Foundation.

The Foundation’s grants complement other company efforts to advance patient safety. These include offerings from the Patient Safety and Risk Management Department to assist members in creating a patient safety culture, measuring patient satisfaction, learning how to avoid risks through analysis of closed claims data, and identifying hidden liability risks.
