- Be brief and simple. Keep your letter to no more than two pages in length.
- Make certain that your legislator knows your communication is from you as a constituent who lives and/or does business in the legislator’s district.
- Explain how the proposed legislation or issue impacts your business and why you support or oppose it based upon your experience and knowledge.
- Refer to a legislative measure’s bill number, if possible.
- Ask your legislator to support or oppose the legislation or issue.
- Write your letter in your own words.
- Request that your legislator take a specific action by explaining what you desire.
- Keep your communication friendly and respectful.
- Thank your legislator for considering your views and position(s).
- Sign your letter and be certain to include your exact return address on the letter.
