A Structured, Hands-On Program to Enhance Patient Communication and Make Sustainable Improvements in Your Practice Environment
Patient Communication INSIGHT is a data-driven program designed to enhance patient communication in your practice and improve health outcomes. It combines tools developed by leading professional and patient safety organizations with valuable expert guidance that is based on The Doctors Company’s claims data insights and years of experience in the field. Your patient safety risk manager will supply the tools and talk you through the process. The steps include:
- A special tool called Ask Me 3® that is designed to engage patients in their care.
- A patient experience survey to gather actionable data.
- Online training to build and apply empathetic listening skills.
This activity is approved for 14 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ and 14 ADA CERP continuing education credits.*
Step One: Ask Me 3
The first step in the program is to have a sampling of your patients complete the Ask Me 3 tool developed by the National Patient Safety Foundation. This is a brief form designed to foster health literacy and promote open communication between patients and their providers. Patients are encouraged to participate in their own care by writing down and understanding the answers to three critical questions:
- What is my main problem?
- What do I need to do?
- Why is it important for me to do this?
Step Two: Patient Experience Survey
Step two is a patient experience survey that evaluates how patients perceive the care they received. Your patient safety risk manager will supply the survey tool, analyze the data, and provide specific action steps to help your practice improve communication and address any problem areas.
Step Three: Online Training to Build Empathetic Listening Skills
The final step is to complete Listening with Empathy, an online training module for doctors offered as part of the American Medical Association’s STEPS Forward™ series. You will learn how to use empathetic listening skills to build more effective communication with patients.
After the program, your patient safety risk manager will review your documentation and confirm that all requirements of the three-step process have been satisfied. Upon completing an evaluation of the program, you will receive a certificate of continuing medical education (CME) or continuing dental education participation.
