OB Patient Safety Credit Program

We are proud to offer the OB Patient Safety Credit Program, our voluntary program that is open to all qualifying member obstetricians, family practitioners providing obstetrical care, and certified nurse midwives (CNMs) who are actively involved in deliveries.

On-demand courses for Phases One and Two are available through our partnership with The Sullivan Group, a leading provider of patient safety, risk management, and performance improvement solutions for healthcare professionals.

Phase Three, which is available through two credentialing organizations, rewards physicians and their CNMs who earn certification in electronic fetal monitoring.

Phase One

The first phase of the program is built around courses addressing the most common types of obstetrical claims. Qualifying members who meet all of the requirements will receive a patient safety credit of up to 10 percent applied to their next two policy renewal periods and six hours of continuing medical education (CME) credit. Courses are accredited by The Sullivan Group.

Members must complete the following four courses with a passing score:

  • Comprehensive Fetal Heart Monitoring.
  • Shoulder Dystocia.
  • Ectopic Pregnancy in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Communication Strategies to Improve Patient Safety in High-Risk Situations.

Members must demonstrate that they have successfully completed the four courses by providing the patient safety risk manager with a copy of each course certificate. All courses must be completed within the calendar year in which the first course is begun. The cost of the four courses in Phase One is $250.

Phase Two

Courses in the second phase of the program address postpartum hemorrhage, cognitive errors in obstetrics and gynecology, and placental pathology for the obstetric clinician. Qualifying members who complete the requirements will receive a patient safety credit of up to 10 percent applied to their next two policy renewal periods and 10 hours of CME credit. Courses are accredited by The Sullivan Group.

Members must complete the following five courses with a passing score:

  • Postpartum Hemorrhage, Parts One and Two.
  • Cognitive Errors in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Parts One and Two.
  • Placental Pathology for the Obstetric Clinician.

Members must demonstrate that they have successfully completed the five courses by providing the patient safety risk manager with a copy of each course certificate. All courses must be completed within the calendar year in which the first course is begun. The cost of the five courses in Phase Two is $210.

Phase Three

Phase Three requires members to earn certification in electronic fetal monitoring. Qualifying members who complete the requirements will receive a patient safety credit of up to 10 percent applied to their next three policy renewal periods.

Participants can select programs provided by two credentialing organizations, the National Certification Corporation or the Perinatal Quality Foundation.* The cost is $210 for the National Certification Corporation program and $150 for the Perinatal Quality Foundation program.

Members must demonstrate that they have earned certification by providing a copy of the certification document to their patient safety risk manager. To be granted three renewal years of patient safety credit, the member must maintain current certification for all three years.
